THE ENNEAGRAM’S CORPORATE & ORGANIZATIONAL CONTRIBUTION
Businesses and Organizations have a wealth of great resources for employees to understand themselves and those with whom they work. DISC, Myers-Briggs, Insights, Cultural Index, StrengthsFinder, and more help create environments where teams thrive and individuals are able to maximize their abilities on behalf of the company or organization.
Complimenting these personality profiling systems is the Enneagram wisdom. Though different from these profiling systems, it too has something significant to contribute in the workplace.
What is that contribution?
Namely the Enneagram offers insight for companies and organizations to understand how the “why that individual employees live by” is impacting their ability to contribute positively to the corporate “why that the company is living for.”
Companies and Organizations are encouraged and admonished by authors/speakers such as Simon Sinek to know their “corporate why.” The expectation is to be able to articulate universally within the whole the “why that they live for” – the “why” that is the purpose corporately being pursued by all. When individual team members understand their Enneagram type, they are able to better contribute to corporate purpose.
The Enneagram offers them understanding of the “why” that individuals already live by – their motivation deep within them guiding all that they feel, think, and do. And the concern? If you don’t personally know the “why that you live by,” you will likely – even unintentionally – sabotage your corporate “why that you live for.”
With guidance and self-reflection, each employee comes to understand their core type, thereby knowing the motivation behind their work. In addition, as people come to know the Enneagram, they can learn to work and lead towards the health and strengths of their number, learning how to recognize when unhealth is creeping in and how to recognize the way their motivation is undermining their contribution, effectiveness, and leadership.
Complimenting this individual work is the Enneagram’s ability to help teams within the company work more efficiently, both enhancing understanding within a team for its effectiveness as well as enhancing the team’s interaction with other teams and leadership. In particular, with guidance and coaching, teams are able to see the way they primarily operate and how that impacts the whole of the organization. This guidance proves to be particularly fruitful when the organization’s leadership understands how their Enneagram style both as individuals and as a team is influencing how they are leading the organization in healthy or unhealthy ways.
